A feature that allows users to set a quick, personalized status on Messenger that informs their contacts about their availability or mood—without blocking messages. Think of it as a lightweight, non-intrusive way to set boundaries or share your vibe (e.g., "In a meeting," "Feeling quiet today," "On vacation").
I designed “Quiet Context,” a feature that lets users set subtle, personalized statuses like "In a meeting" or "Feeling quiet today" to share availability without blocking messages. By combining user research and iterative design, I created a seamless, user-friendly solution that balances connection and boundaries within Messenger’s interface.

Research & Testing
Many users want to communicate their availability or mood to their contacts without fully turning off notifications or appearing offline. Existing options like 'Mute Notifications' or 'Active Status' don't provide enough nuance for real-life situations. People often end up feeling interrupted or pressured to respond immediately, even when they'd prefer not to.
This project focuses on designing 'Quiet Context,' a feature for Facebook Messenger that allows users to share their current status with a custom message or pre-set options, creating a better balance between connection and boundaries.
User Insights:
"To better understand this issue, I conducted informal interviews with 8 users who regularly use Messenger. Common themes included:
'I wish I could let people know I'm busy without ignoring them.'
'Sometimes, I don’t want to reply, but I don’t want to seem rude.'
'I’d love to share my vibe without sending a full message.'
Additionally, I looked at existing status-like features in apps like Slack, Instagram, and WhatsApp for inspiration, identifying what worked and what felt clunky or intrusive.
Feature Goals:
The Quiet Context feature had three primary goals:
Allow users to set a custom status or choose from pre-set templates.
Ensure the status appears unobtrusively in the chat interface.
Make it quick and easy to toggle or customize.
My initial prototypes focused on integrating a status icon into the user’s profile picture in Messenger and a small status bar below the chat input box for visibility.
Usability Testing:
I tested the feature with 5 users using an interactive prototype. Feedback included:
'I love how easy it is to set the status—it feels seamless.'
'It would be helpful to have an auto-clear option for temporary statuses like "In a meeting.
The Quiet Context feature successfully allows users to share their availability or mood without disrupting the core Messenger experience. It’s subtle, easy to use, and respects both the sender and receiver’s time and attention.
What I Learned:
This project reinforced the importance of designing for real-life human interactions, especially in digital spaces. Balancing connection and boundaries is key to creating a positive user experience.
Next Steps:
If expanded, this feature could integrate with calendar apps to auto-update statuses (e.g., 'In a Meeting' during a scheduled call). It could also include status analytics, showing which friends interact most during specific statuses.
